Why the range is so wide
Word count is a proxy for time, not a measure of it. Four things decide where you land in the range.
Pauses. A five minute talk with three deliberate pauses of five seconds each has lost 25 seconds — around 60 words of script. Speakers who are comfortable with silence always need fewer words than the calculator suggests.
Sentence length. Long sentences are read faster per word than short ones, because short sentences carry a full stop, and a full stop invites a breath. A script full of punchy four-word lines will run longer than its word count implies.
Complexity. Technical terms, numbers and names slow you down. A 750-word speech about quarterly revenue figures takes noticeably longer to deliver than 750 words of personal story.
Nerves. Almost everyone speaks faster on stage than in rehearsal. If you have not presented much, expect your real pace to be 10–20 words per minute quicker than when you practise alone.
How to check your own pace
Rather than trusting an average, measure yourself once and reuse the number forever:
- Take a paragraph of about 150 words from your script.
- Read it aloud at the pace you would actually use in the room.
