Four minutes is the honest single answer. Five is the number most publishers would print, because they assume 200 words per minute.
Where 238 comes from
It is the figure from a 2019 meta-analysis by Marc Brysbaert, which pooled 190 studies covering nearly 18,000 participants. Silent reading of non-fiction English averaged 238 words per minute; fiction came out higher, at around 260, because narrative prose is more predictable.
That study matters because the numbers repeated across the internet — 200, 250, 300 — mostly trace back to much smaller studies or to nothing identifiable at all.
What actually changes the time
Material. A news story and a statistics paper are not read at the same rate. Technical material pulls the rate to 100–200 words per minute because readers stop, re-read and look things up. Anything with equations or code is slower again.
Purpose. Skimming for one fact can hit 700 words per minute; reading to remember drops below 150. The same reader with the same text can vary threefold depending on what they want from it.
Screen or paper. Screen reading is slightly slower for most people, and noticeably slower on a phone, where a 1,000-word article is roughly fifteen swipes.
Interruption. The biggest factor in practice, and the one no formula includes. A four minute article read on a commute with two notifications takes seven minutes.
What this means if you are writing
If your platform shows a reading-time badge, it is a promise. Quote the slower estimate — five minutes rather than four — and you will rarely be wrong in the direction that annoys people.
More usefully, four minutes is about the limit of unbroken attention for online reading. That is why 1,000 words is such a common article length: it is the most you can ask for before the reader needs a reason to keep going. Subheadings, a list, an image — anything that breaks the wall and lets someone re-enter after looking away.
