Between eight and ten minutes is the range worth planning around.
The second thousand words is not like the first
Reading time scales linearly. Attention does not.
At 1,000 words you are asking for four minutes of someone’s day, which most people will give to something that looks useful. At 2,000 you are asking for eight or nine, and that crosses a threshold: the reader now needs to be confident the piece is worth finishing before they are halfway through it.
In practice, that means a 2,000-word article gets read in one of two ways. Either the reader is already committed — they searched for exactly this, or they trust the source — or they skim it, reading the headings and the first line of each section. Both are fine, but they have to be designed for:
- Subheadings that say something. A skimmer reads these and nothing else. “Why this matters” tells them nothing; “Costs rose 40% in two years” tells them everything.
- The answer up front. If the piece exists to answer a question, answer it in the first hundred words and spend the remaining 1,900 justifying it. Burying the answer at the end loses everyone who was skimming.
- Somewhere to re-enter. A list, a table, a pull quote every few hundred words gives a returning reader a landmark.
Should an article be 2,000 words?
Only if the subject needs it. Content-marketing advice to “write 2,000+ words for SEO” confuses correlation with instruction: thorough pages tend to be long, and thoroughness is what earns links and rankings. Length on its own earns a higher bounce rate.
A useful test: would a knowledgeable friend answering this question out loud take eight minutes? For “how do I reduce my essay word count”, probably. For “how many pages is 1,000 words”, certainly not — that is a 600-word answer, and padding it to 2,000 makes it worse.
Reading time versus speaking time
Read aloud, 2,000 words takes about 13 minutes 20 seconds — five minutes longer than reading it silently. That is why a 2,000-word blog post makes a 13-minute video script, not a 10-minute one, and why presenters who reuse written material consistently overrun. Use the speaking time calculator for anything that will be spoken.
Other measures of 2,000 words
- Pages: 4 single spaced, 8 double spaced.
- Characters: roughly 11,600 with spaces.
- Sentences: around 110, at 18 words each.
- Phone screens: about 30 swipes.
Frequently asked questions
How long does 2,000 words take to read on a phone? The rate is similar but slightly slower, and it feels longer because of the scrolling. Assume ten minutes.
How long does 2,000 words of technical material take? 12 to 20 minutes. Dense material at 100–160 words per minute is normal, and that is before any re-reading.
Does reading time affect SEO? Not directly. Time on page and whether readers return to the search results do correlate with rankings, which is an argument for writing something worth eight minutes rather than for writing eight minutes’ worth.
