How it works

The amount is split into naira and kobo, rounded to the nearest kobo. Each part is written in words in the British style that Nigerian English uses, with “and” after the hundreds, and the two are joined with “and”. Naira and kobo stay the same in the plural.

Amount gives the plain wording for invoices, receipts and contracts.Cheque adds “only” at the end, which stops anyone adding words after yours.

Writing a naira cheque

  1. Write the date, and the payee’s name on the “Pay” line.
  2. Write the amount in figures in the box, close to the ₦ sign so nothing can be added before it: ₦25,000.00.
  3. Write the amount in words on the line below, starting at the far left: “Twenty-five thousand naira only”.
  4. Draw a line through any space left after the words and after the figures.
  5. Check that the words and figures agree, then sign.

Practice differs a little between banks, for example on whether kobo go in words or figures. If you are unsure, ask your branch. The full cheque writing guidecovers other currencies.

Frequently asked questions

Is it “naira” or “nairas”?
Naira. The word does not change in the plural, and neither does kobo: “five hundred naira and fifty kobo”, never “nairas” or “kobos”.
How many kobo are in a naira?
One hundred. So ₦10.75 is ten naira and seventy-five kobo. Kobo coins are rarely used today, but kobo still appear in bank transfers, bills and invoices.
How do I write ₦1,000,000 in words?
“One million naira”. On a cheque, add “only”: “One million naira only”. ₦1,500,000 is “one million five hundred thousand naira”.
Should I write “one hundred and fifty thousand” or “one hundred fifty thousand”?
Nigerian English follows the British style, with “and”: “one hundred and fifty thousand naira”. That is the default here. Turn “Use and” off if your document follows American style.
How should I write naira on a cheque?
Write the amount in words, starting at the far left of the line, and end with “only”: “Twenty-five thousand naira only”. Draw a line through any space left over. Banks can have their own preferences, so if a cheque is returned, ask your branch which wording they want.
