What files it reads
- PDF — any PDF with selectable text, including multi-hundred-page reports.
- Word (.docx) — the body text. Deleted tracked changes are left out.
- Text files — .txt, Markdown, CSV, subtitles (.srt) and HTML, with markup stripped.
A scanned PDF has no text layer to read. For those, use the image word counter, which recognises the text in a picture.
Getting the count your reader will use
Once the file is open, its text is in the box and you can edit it. Delete the title page, reference list, headers or appendices your word limit excludes and the count updates at once. Our guide to counting words in a PDF covers the other ways to do it, in Word, Google Docs and Acrobat.
PDF text sometimes comes out with a line break at the end of every line. That does not change the word count, but it does inflate the line count; the text cleaner joins the lines back into paragraphs.
