The voices come from your device and browser, so the list is different on every computer and phone.

Runs in your browser. Local voices keep your text on your device; online voices send it to your browser’s maker, never to us.

How it works

Every modern browser can speak text through the Web Speech API, using voices supplied by your operating system or browser. This page passes your text to those voices one sentence at a time, which avoids the cut-off some browsers apply to long speech and lets you follow along: the word being spoken is highlighted, or the whole sentence where a voice does not report its position.

Speed runs from half to double the normal rate. Pitch makes the voice higher or lower. The choices apply the next time you press Read aloud.

Your text and the voices

The voice list comes from your device, so it changes from one computer or phone to the next. The browser tells the page whether each voice is local or remote, and the tool marks remote ones “(online)”:

  • Local voices produce the speech on your device. Your text stays there.
  • Online voices are produced by a speech service run by your browser’s maker, so the browser sends them the text. They often sound more natural, which is the trade-off.

When the page opens it picks a local voice in your language if there is one. This site never receives or stores what you paste.

Ways to use it

  • Proofreading. Hearing your writing read back catches missing words, repeated words and clumsy sentences that your eyes skip over.
  • Rehearsing a speech. Listen to how it flows, then check its length with the speaking time calculator.
  • Reading long articles. Listen while you do something else, at a speed that suits you.
  • Learning a language. Choose a voice in the language you are learning and slow it down.
  • Accessibility. For anyone who finds long blocks of text tiring to read.

Frequently asked questions

Is this text to speech free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no limit on length. It uses the voices already built into your device and browser, so there is nothing to pay for and nothing to install.
Why are the voices different on my phone and my laptop?
The voices belong to your operating system and browser, not to this site. Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and ChromeOS each ship their own, and Chrome and Edge add some online voices of their own. A voice you like on one device may not exist on another.
Does my text leave my device?
Not with a local voice: the speech is made on your device. Voices marked “(online)” are different. The browser reports them as remote, which means it sends the text to its maker’s speech service, such as Google for Chrome’s “Google” voices or Microsoft for Edge’s “Online (Natural)” voices. This site never receives your text either way.
Why does the highlight jump a sentence at a time?
Some voices do not tell the browser which word they are saying. With those, the tool highlights the sentence being read instead. Many built-in voices on Windows and Apple devices report each word.
Can I download the audio as an MP3?
No. Browsers play speech straight to your speakers and do not let a web page record it. To save the audio, use your device’s own screen or audio recorder while it plays.
Why did it stop partway through a long text?
Some browsers cut off long speech after about 15 seconds. This tool reads one sentence at a time to avoid that. If it still stops, press Stop and Read aloud again; on Android, Pause can also stop speech entirely, which is a browser limitation.
