How the Morse code translator works

Every letter, digit and common punctuation mark has a fixed pattern of short signals (dots) and long ones (dashes). The translator writes each character’s pattern with a space between letters and a slash between words, following the international standard, ITU-R M.1677.

Playback uses the standard timing. A dot is one unit long and a dash three. The gap inside a letter is one unit, the gap between letters is three, and the gap between words is seven. Change the speed and every unit changes with it, so the rhythm stays right at any speed.

The Morse code alphabet

International Morse code for every character the translator supports. The commonest letters have the shortest codes: E is a single dot and T a single dash. The story goes that Alfred Vail, who worked with Samuel Morse, counted the type in a printer’s case to find out which letters were used most.

Learning Morse code

  • Learn letters by sound, not by counting dots on a chart. “Dah-di-dah-dit” sticks better than “dash dot dash dot”.
  • Start with a few letters at a time, such as E, T, A, N, I and M, and add more once those are automatic.
  • Send letters at a brisk speed with longer gaps between them. You learn the sound of each letter, then close the gaps as you improve.
  • Practise a little every day. Ten minutes daily beats an hour once a week.

Frequently asked questions

How do I translate Morse code to English?
Paste the Morse into the box using dots (.) and dashes (-), with a space between letters and a slash (/) between words. The translator recognises it as Morse and shows the English text. It also accepts the • and − characters other sites produce, and three spaces as a word break.
What does SOS look like in Morse code?
... --- ...: three dots, three dashes, three dots. It is sent as one unbroken signal rather than three letters, and was chosen because it is easy to send and hard to mistake, not because it stands for anything.
What speed should I use?
Beginners usually start around 5 to 10 words per minute, the level once needed for an amateur radio licence in many countries. 15 to 20 WPM is a comfortable conversational speed, and experienced operators copy 30 WPM or more. Speed is measured with the word “PARIS”, which is exactly 50 dot-lengths long.
Why was a character left out?
International Morse code has no code for it. The standard covers the letters A to Z, the digits 0 to 9 and common punctuation. Accented letters, emoji and symbols such as # and % have no international code, so the translator lists them under the result instead of guessing.
Is the flashing light safe?
It is off unless you turn it on. At higher speeds it flashes several times a second, which can be a problem for people with photosensitive epilepsy, so leave it off if flashing light affects you, and keep the speed low if you are unsure.
