Ways to use it

  • Writing sprints. Set 15 minutes and write without editing. Most people draft 300 to 500 words in a focused sprint, and the clock keeps you from stopping to polish.
  • Timed essay practice. Exams give a fixed time per answer. Practising against the same clock shows how many words you realistically get down.
  • Typing speed. Use the 1-minute timer and type a passage you know, then read the typing WPM figure, which uses the same five-character word as typing tests.

Words to time, the other way round

To find out how long a finished piece takes to read or say aloud, rather than to write, use the reading time and speaking time calculators.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between words per minute and typing WPM?
Words per minute counts the actual words you wrote. Typing WPM is the typing-test standard, where every five characters, including spaces, count as one word. Typing WPM lets you compare results across texts; words per minute tells you how fast your writing is growing.
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is typical for adults who type regularly, 60 to 70 is fast, and professional typists work at 80 or more. Composing your own words is slower than copying, so a writing speed of 20 to 30 words per minute is normal.
What counts as a keystroke?
Every letter, number, space, punctuation mark, Enter and Backspace. Shift, arrow keys and shortcuts are not counted. More keystrokes than characters means corrections: the gap is how much you deleted and retyped.
Is what I type saved or uploaded?
Neither. Everything happens in your browser, and the text is gone when you reset or leave the page. Copy it first if you want to keep it.
