How the lorem ipsum generator works

Choose how much text you need and in what unit. Sentences are built from the Latin vocabulary of the original passage, six to sixteen words long, and paragraphs have four to seven sentences, so the text has the uneven shape of real writing. The word and character counts under the result update as you change the settings.

Start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” opens with the familiar first sentence, so anyone looking at the design knows at once that it is placeholder text. Turn it off if you want text that looks less obviously like filler.

When not to use it

Placeholder text hides problems that real text would show. Real headlines are often longer than the space designed for them, real names do not fit neat boxes, and translations can run a third longer than English. Once the layout is settled, test it with real content, or at least with your longest likely headline.

What does lorem ipsum mean?
Nothing, on purpose. It is scrambled Latin taken from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a book on ethics Cicero wrote in 45 BC. “Lorem” is the end of the word “dolorem” (pain), cut off mid-word. The words look like a real language without being readable, so people judge the layout instead of the content.
Why use lorem ipsum rather than real text?
Real sentences pull attention. Reviewers start editing the copy instead of looking at the design. Lorem ipsum has the rhythm of real writing, with words of mixed lengths, commas and full stops, but nothing to read.
How do I test a character limit?
Choose “Characters” and enter the limit. The text is exactly that many characters long, spaces included, so you can paste it into a form field or a design and see what happens at the limit.
Can I get it as HTML?
Yes. Turn on “HTML paragraphs” and each paragraph is wrapped in <p> tags, ready to paste into a web page or a template.
Is it the same text every time?
The opening sentence is the standard one, if you keep it on. The rest is put together at random from Cicero’s vocabulary. Press “New text” for a different version.
