Finding the word you overuse
The repeated word checker shows which words you lean on most. Look each one up here, then vary a few of them — not all. Repeating a key term is often clearer than swapping it for a synonym the reader has to decode.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the synonyms come from?
From WordNet, a lexical database from Princeton University that groups English words by meaning. The list is sorted so the most common synonyms come first.
Why are synonyms grouped as noun, verb and so on?
Many words have more than one job. "Show" can be a verb (demonstrate) or a noun (display), and the right synonym depends on which one you mean.
Can I look up a word in the plural or past tense?
Yes. Try "decisions" or "argued" and the tool finds the dictionary form, "decision" or "argue", and shows its synonyms.
Is a synonym always a safe swap?
No. Synonyms share a meaning, but not always tone or register. "Big" and "enormous" both mean large, but only one fits "a big decision". Read the sentence back after you swap.
