Every limit is taken from the platform’s own help or developer pages, last checked on 4 October 2026. Platforms change these without notice, so if a figure looks wrong, the linked page is the one to trust.

The limit for 2026 entry onwards

From 2026 entry, the UCAS personal statement is three answers instead of one long essay. The three questions are:

  1. Why do you want to study this course or subject?
  2. How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
  3. What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Together, the answers can use up to 4,000 characters including spaces, and each answer must be at least 350 characters. You can share out the 4,000 however suits your course. Admissions tutors read the three answers as one statement, so avoid repeating yourself.

How to check it here

Paste all three answers into the box to see the total against 4,000. Then paste each answer on its own to make sure it clears 350. Count with spaces: UCAS’s limit includes them.

Older guides mention a limit of 47 lines. UCAS’s current guidance for 2026 entry onwards gives the character limit only, so we do not count lines. The counter in the UCAS application is the final word, so leave a few characters spare.

Examples

4,000 characters is roughly 550 to 650 words of English, depending on how long your words are. A split that works for many applicants:

AnswerCharacters
1. Why this subjectabout 1,500
2. Your studiesabout 1,300
3. Outside educationabout 1,200

This is only a starting point. Every answer must reach 350, and the right split depends on your course and what you have done.

For anything else, the character counter counts with and without spaces.

Frequently asked questions

4,000 characters including spaces, shared across the three answers.

Yes. Each of the three answers must be at least 350 characters.
How many words is 4,000 characters?
Roughly 550 to 650 words of English. It depends on word length, so always check the character count rather than relying on words.
Is there still a 47-line limit?
UCAS’s current guidance for 2026 entry onwards states the character limit only. We have not found a current official line limit, so we do not apply one.
