How it works

Remove all line breaks replaces every line break with a space, so the whole text becomes one paragraph. It is the quickest fix for a short passage.

Remove line breaks, keep paragraphs treats a blank line as the end of a paragraph. Lines inside each paragraph are joined; the gap between paragraphs stays. Use it for anything longer than a paragraph.

Remove extra spaces tidies up afterwards, collapsing the double spaces that joining lines can leave behind. Your original text is never changed.

Examples

Text copied from a PDF:

The committee met on Tuesday to
review the budget for next year.

Several members asked for more
time to read the proposal.

With all line breaks removed:

The committee met on Tuesday to review the budget for next year. Several members asked for more time to read the proposal.

With paragraphs kept:

The committee met on Tuesday to review the budget for next year.

Several members asked for more time to read the proposal.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove line breaks but keep paragraphs?
Untick “Remove all line breaks” and tick “Remove line breaks, keep paragraphs”. Lines inside each paragraph are joined, and the blank line between paragraphs stays.
Why does text copied from a PDF have line breaks everywhere?
A PDF records where each line ends on the page, not where each paragraph ends. When you copy it, every one of those line ends comes too. Removing them puts the sentences back together.
What happens to the spaces where the breaks were?
Each line break becomes a single space, so words either side do not run together. Spaces already at the end or start of a line are folded into that one space.
Can I remove line breaks in Word or Google Docs instead?
In Word, use Find and Replace with ^p (paragraph mark) or ^l (manual line break) in the Find box and a space in Replace. Google Docs needs “Use regular expressions” and \n. Pasting here is quicker, and the keep-paragraphs option has no simple equivalent in either.
