Strikethrough Text Generator

Type your text to put a line through it, ready to copy and paste into a post or a bio. Underline is here too.

Type above to see your own text in every style.

These are symbols, not fonts. Screen readers may skip them or read them out letter by letter, and search can miss them, so keep them out of anything important. Why?

Runs in your browser. Your text is never uploaded.

How it works

Unicode has “combining” marks that attach themselves to the character before them. One of them is a long horizontal stroke (U+0336). The generator adds it after every character, spaces included, so the line runs through the whole text. Underline works the same way with a low line (U+0332).

Examples

You typeResult
old price $40o̶l̶d̶ ̶p̶r̶i̶c̶e̶ ̶$̶4̶0̶
I was wrongI̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶w̶r̶o̶n̶g̶
important (underline)i̲m̲p̲o̲r̲t̲a̲n̲t̲

Crossed-out text works well for a joke correction (“I̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶w̶r̶o̶n̶g̶ I changed my mind”) or a struck-through old price next to the new one. Just make sure the new price is in plain text.

These are Unicode symbols, not fonts

Nothing on this page changes a font. Each style swaps your letters for different characters that happen to look like styled letters: 𝐁 is “mathematical bold capital B”, a separate character from B, made so that equations can tell different kinds of variable apart. That is why the text keeps its style when you paste it somewhere that has no formatting, such as a social media bio.

It also has real costs, and it is fairer to say so:

  • Screen readers may not read it. Some skip the characters altogether, and others announce each one, such as “mathematical bold capital B”, so a short phrase becomes a long string of symbol names. Upside-down and enclosed letters are often read as nonsense.
  • Search may not find it. A search for “sale” will not always match 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞, so styled names and keywords can be harder to find on the platforms that use them.
  • Some devices show boxes. Older phones and some fonts lack these characters and show an empty box or a question mark instead.

So use it for decoration, not information: a word or two of emphasis, a name, a heading in a bio. Never style a whole post, a link, a price, a date or anything a reader must understand. Where real formatting is available, such as in a document, an email or a web page, use the bold and italic buttons instead. They look the same and work for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cross out text on Instagram, X or Facebook?
Type it here, tap the strikethrough style to copy it, and paste it into your post. Each letter carries its own line, so it stays crossed out in apps that have no strikethrough button.
Why is the line broken between letters?
Each character gets its own line through it, and some fonts draw those lines a little short or at slightly different heights. It depends on the font the app uses, not on the text you copied.
Does strikethrough work in Discord, Slack or WhatsApp?
Those apps have their own formatting, which works better: wrap the text in two tildes in Discord (~~text~~) and one in Slack and WhatsApp (~text~). Use the copied strikethrough letters where no formatting exists.
Can a screen reader tell the text is crossed out?
No. The line is a separate mark after each letter, so a screen reader reads the letters, may announce the marks too, and gives no hint that the text is crossed out. If the crossing out matters, such as an old price, say so in words as well.
