Short answer
UCAS personal statement (UK)
From 2026 entry, the UCAS personal statement is three answers rather than one essay:
- Why do you want to study this course or subject?
- How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
- What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
The limits:
- 4,000 characters in total, including spaces, shared across all three answers.
- At least 350 characters per answer. There is no maximum for a single answer, so you can weight them however suits your application, as long as the total stays under 4,000.
The limit is in characters, not words. 4,000 characters is roughly 550 to 650 words, depending on how long your words are. Spaces, punctuation and line breaks all count.
A sensible split
There is no required split, but an even-ish division keeps each answer substantial:

The second and third answers usually carry the most evidence, so if one needs to be longer, make it one of those. The UCAS form counts as you type. To check a draft before pasting it in, use the character counter on each answer and then on all three together.
Common App personal essay (US)
The Common Application essay has a 650-word maximum and a 250-word minimum. The box stops accepting text at 650 words, and anything past the limit in a pasted draft is cut off, so check the count before you paste.
Most admissions advisers suggest using most of the space: 550 to 650 words. A 300-word essay is allowed, but it gives the reader less to go on than every other applicant’s. Paste your draft into the essay word counter, set the limit to 650, and you will see exactly how much room is left.
Supplemental essays for individual colleges have their own limits, often 100 to 300 words. Each college lists them on its section of the Common App.
Other personal statements
- Graduate school: usually 500 to 1,000 words, or one to two pages. The programme’s instructions always take priority.
- Medical and law school: set by the application system, and often in characters. Check whether the limit includes spaces.
- Job applications: a supporting statement is often capped by the online form. If no limit is given, one to two pages is typical.
Cutting to the limit
When you are over, cut repetition before you cut content. In a personal statement the usual culprits are:
- An opening that announces what the statement will say instead of saying it.
- Two examples that make the same point. Keep the stronger one.
- Adjectives about yourself (“passionate”, “dedicated”) that your examples already show.
