The conversion
English words average about 4.8 letters. Add the space after each word and the occasional punctuation mark, and everyday prose comes to about 5.8 characters per word. Formal and academic writing uses longer words (“demonstrates”, “significantly”) and runs nearer 6.5.
So, to convert with spaces included:
- Characters to words: divide by 5.8 (everyday) or 6.5 (academic).
- Words to characters: multiply by 5.8 or 6.5.

These are averages. Your own text can land 10% or more either side, depending on vocabulary: a paragraph of short words packs many more words into the same space than a paragraph of technical terms.
Without spaces
If a limit counts characters without spaces, take the space out of the average: about 4.9 characters per word for everyday prose and 5.5 for academic writing. 500 characters without spaces is roughly 90 to 100 words.
When the limit is in characters, count characters
The table is for planning: deciding how much you can say before you start. When a form, an application or a platform sets a character limit, it enforces the exact number and ignores averages, so paste the finished text into the character counter before you submit.
